Kim Shin-bae, CEO of LINE Digital Frontier (LDF)

In a remarkable digital transformation of Japan's manga landscape, LINE Manga has emerged as the undisputed leader in the country's booming webtoon industry, marking a decade of innovation since its 2013 launch. The platform, originally introduced by Naver Webtoon, has revolutionized how Japanese readers consume digital comics.

Under the strategic leadership of Kim Shin-bae, CEO and Chief Growth Officer of LINE Digital Frontier, the platform has achieved unprecedented success. Speaking at a packed press conference in Tokyo on February 13, Kim revealed how a comprehensive 2021 app redesign catalyzed explosive growth by seamlessly blending Korean webtoon hits with Japanese user preferences.

"The Japanese market represents a cornerstone of global webtoon entertainment revenue," Kim emphasized, highlighting the platform's ambitious expansion plans. "We're just scratching the surface of our growth potential here."

The numbers tell a compelling story. Korean sensations like "Mercenary Enrollment" have shattered revenue records, generating an astounding 180 million yen (1.63 billion KRW) in monthly earnings during 2023. Other breakout hits, including "The Remarried Empress," "Predatory Bride," and "Tough Guy," have consistently surpassed 100 million yen in monthly transactions.

Market dynamics have shifted dramatically in LINE Manga's favor. Recent Sensor Tower data reveals a stunning reversal: LINE Manga now commands 51% market share, overtaking longtime rival Piccoma, which holds 35%. This represents a complete flip from early 2023's figures, when Piccoma led with 51% to LINE Manga's 31%.

The platform's success extends beyond digital comics. LINE Manga is aggressively expanding its multimedia presence, with anime adaptations skyrocketing from a single project in 2022 to 12 in 2024. The company has set an ambitious target of launching 20 anime projects this year alone. A recent collaboration with IPX showcased this strategy through a wildly successful "Mercenary Enrollment" pop-up store.

As LINE Manga continues to reshape Japan's digital entertainment landscape, its blend of Korean creative excellence and Japanese market understanding sets new benchmarks for the global webtoon industry.
